On 10 October 2010, the Netherlands Antilles officially ceased to exist. Curaçao and Sint Maarten have become two new constituent countries. Aruba retains the separate country status it has had since 1986. The three other islands, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, have been integrated into the Netherlands. (Source: UNTERM, 2011)

Country (since 1954) within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1986, Aruba separated from the Netherlands Antilles. As of 15 December 2008, the Netherlands Antilles ceased to exist as a political entity. Curaçao and Sint Maarten became separate countries (autonomous states) within the Kingdom, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba became special status municipalities.
